‘Sir’ - A triumph of restraint & nuance

‘Sir’ has been on my watchlist for quite some time now. I finally got around to watching it today and boy, was it worth the wait!

The film is a charming but provocatively real depiction of the relationship between a widowed maid and her US-returned South Bombay employer, who had his wedding called off! The tagline of the film asks “Is love enough?” and having grown in our Society, all of us know the answer to that question. The sensitive handling of the subject makes us introspect without blatantly showing us up!

At a crisp runtime of 99 minutes, each frame serves to advance the story without resorting to heightened melodrama anywhere. Created by a female filmmaker (Rohena Gera), the treatment of the film is admirable for it triumphs in taking on a subject often perceived as either voyeuristic or taboo.

The film stars the wonderfully restrained and authentic Tillotama Shome and the disarmingly real Vivek Gomber, who grows on you as the movie progresses to its end.

The final scene of the film is one of my favourite in recent Hindi cinema. The film is available on Netflix, I strongly recommend it!
