So much of what people say is repetition
A commissioned screenplay that I finished, that got stuck at the producer’s end, each time we meet - their answer - ‘I’ll have big news for you soon’. I hope, I tell my friends, I wait. Zoom out and it’s been 2.5 years and there hasn’t been a single piece of news.
Well, this could be a situation of avoidance. Subtle lies.
But consider married couples, who’ve learnt each other more than anyone else has. I meet them. Hear your parents speak. They say the same thing the 4847447th time and you’re there for it each time…
Our leaders keep us hoping and waiting, empty promises for decades and decades. Our promises to ourselves - when I finish just this one thing, everything will change. That home. That amount. That girl. That job. That promotion. And ten years pass!
So much of the advice, the assurances we give others, so many of the ‘Aal Izz Wells’ we give ourselves - are so repetitive - and yet each time, we have the hope and the heartbreak of the very first time!
I wonder - is newness overrated? Is it a social media illusion? After all, for every new reel that consumes us, zoom out and it isn’t anything you’ve never seen. You are just made to feel it is and that if you don’t login soon again, you’ll miss the next one.
Javed Sahab was once asked - “What is the purpose of life?” His response, “It is such a pompous question. 8.3 billion people on the planet but what is the purpose of My life!”
Fact of the matter is not many human beings have had radically different lives. Birth, work, sex, children, death - that’s it.
Perhaps life is simply distraction - from the fact that it’s all repetition!
