‘The Naked Director’ - So novel but can’t sustain its novelty

Short note Series reviews

‘The Naked Director’ on Netflix is an intriguing Japanese biographical series on a novel subject - Porn video director Muranishi Toru and his journey in 1980s Japan.

Known in Japan as the ‘Emperor of Porn’, Muranishi claims to have made 3000 porn videos and in doing so constantly battled the repressed and traditional Japanese society (much like India).

Although the series brings to life a novel subject and often contrasts the hypocrisy in how Society views right v/s wrong, it could’ve explained important plot points in detail without taking the huge leaps that it does. In doing so, you’re often left yearning to know more about what has been skipped and disengaged with what is being shown.

All in all, not great but worth viewing for the sheer novelty of the subject. Oh and this has a lot of graphic content, so you’ve been warned!
